1000 articles in Hitchwiki!

Today we reached the milestone of 1000 articles at Hitchwiki.org!  It took less than 3 years to get there.  Already before I found the then called "Hitchhiker's guide to Hitchhiking" I was sure that a wiki for hitchhikers was a good idea.  So I'm very happy that I moved the project to Wikia.com in December 2005. At some point I had been thinking to move it to hitchhikers.couchsurfing.com, but fortunately MrTweek was around.

Alta - Helsinki - Tallinn - Riga

Sorry about all the detail.  The last post has been a while now and I want to write it down while it's fresh. I can always rewrite it later when I'll work on my book. We tried leaving Alta for Tromso, but after 2,5 hours of a lot of cars and none stopping we decided to just head south.  It took another 1,5 hour before someone stopped. For the shortest ride of our trip, 2 km only, but it was encouraging, especially thanks to the strawberries we got from the young woman who picked us up.

Nokia N810

I wish Nokia sold laptops. I really liked my Nokia 770, that I bought in December 2005. It's running mostly free software, and is very Debianic. I wasn't traveling with a laptop then, and it was a nice (and often cheap) way to get online. I also read a lot of books with the excellent FBReader. And I created MaemoDict, which never really worked very well I must admit.

The Wiki Party - closer to reality

Last year I did a BoF at Wikimania 2006 about The Wiki Party, the idea to start a political party. Today Anu sent me a link to a Facebook group with this same title. I jokingly told people "when I'm 40 years old I will start this party if no one else did before then". Fortunately I won't have to, anymore. Of course, it's happenning in Finland. Olli Sirén was considering to run a campaign to the Helsinki City Council.

Crashing at Morgan's in Montreal

amylin and I have been crashing at Morgan's (6 1/2) in Montreal since Thursday.  We hitchhiked here from Northampshire, MA, where we stayed with Joe. We had left a bit later than planned so it was not easy to get to Montreal.

Creative Commons books

Last week I found a list of books available under Creative Commons licenses on the Creative Commons wiki.  You can find some great titles, such as Wall Street, Capitalism 3.0 and Asterisk: The Future of Telephony. Some of my favorites were already on the list (Free Culture and Down and Out of the Magic Kingdom and We the Media) but I had to add Everyone in Silico and Producing Open Source Software. I was also pleased to find out that the

Wikivoyage

I have been a contributor on Wikitravel for a long time now. I was not too worried when Wikitravel was bought by Internet Brands (which has already shown interest in buying CouchSurfing). But I have been annoyed by the lack of database dumps at Wikitravel for a long time now.

Guaka

Guaka was born somewhere in the Netherlands and lived in Paris, Mali, Peru, New Zealand, Italy, Amsterdam and Brussels. He has worked and volunteered for a wide range of NGOs, such as Geekcorps Mali, CEPES in Peru, CouchSurfing, he has done scientific research on trust metrics and he even spent some time in the office of the largest social network in the Netherlands.

P2P foundation

Since 2007 I've provided technical support to the P2P foundation. Both the MediaWiki installation as well as some work related to the WordPress blog.

Hitchwiki

Hitchwiki is a wiki about hitchhiking. It grew out of another wiki about hitchhiking. At the end of 2006, when I was at the CS Collective in New Zealand, MrTweek and I decided to start a new independent wiki and Hitchwiki was born.
